chapter sixteen
TORONTO, ONTARIO
FEBRUARY 15, 2002
Peter Whitmore was gone – yet again.
Toronto police officers had come to his cheap downtown motel in the early evening hours, making yet another in a long list of curfew checks. To date, Whitmore had seemingly been following the rules and given police no reason to pull him back into custody. Until now.
Police were greeted with an empty suite on this latest visit, an alarming sign that triggered the immediate obtaining of a Canada-wide warrant. Officers began asking other guests and tenants in the motel about Whitmore, hoping to put a more detailed timeline together about his recent movements.
They got more than they expected. One of his neighbours, a single mother of three young children, was stunned to learn that the friendly man living just down the hall was one of Canada’s most notorious sex offenders.
Whitmore certainly hadn’t offered that detail about himself when they’d first met a few weeks earlier, shortly after he moved in. In fact, he hadn’t even given his real name. Whitmore had introduced himself as “Rob Edwards.”
Now the woman was an emotional wreck, recalling every single encounter she’d had with Whitmore during that time. He had taken an immediate liking to her boys, aged five, two and seven months. Whitmore had spent the most time with the oldest child, even going so far as to play-wrestle and tickle him on a number of occasions.
And while the mother had always been in the room during the visits, she was sickened by the thought that Whitmore had put his hands on her children – with her consent.
Police now had grounds to lay additional charges. Whitmore, of course, was under a lifetime ban from being alone with children unless he’d obtained written consent.
Although there were no new sexual assault allegations, police believed Whitmore’s contact with children and his sudden vanishing act was a sign that he was once again preparing to self-destruct. They had to find him. And fast.

CHILLIWACK, BRITISH COLUMBIA
FEBRUARY 25, 2002
He had come west, apparently wanting to spend time with his closest living relative. But now, a bearded, scruffy looking Peter Whitmore was back in custody, after police received a tip that he was in same community as his aunt, Lynn Hopkins.
Police made a disturbing discovery shortly after re-arresting Whitmore. Pictures of children. Binoculars. Latex gloves. Lubricant. Zip ties. Duct tape. An application for a Canadian passport. And child porn website addresses. It was an all-inclusive tool box for an experienced pedophile, a sure sign that Whitmore was preparing to strike again.
His lawyer, Dan Brodsky, disagreed. He immediately went on the offensive, saying this wasn’t an example of his client trying to run away and hide so he could continue to victimize children. Instead, he said Whitmore was just frustrated with the endless media coverage and lack of substantial treatment he was receiving in Ontario. Brodsky also disputed claims of a so-called “rape kit”, saying Whitmore may have just been gathering hunting supplies.
Police and prosecutors weren’t buying it. They believed Whitmore was
